Title: Interesting
Post by: Peter on February 13, 2011, 04:09:04 PM
Hi Charles,

Do Wales and Scotland have their own language?

Wales

People in Wales speak a completely different language. About 25% of the people there still speak in their native Celtic tongue called welsh.

Shwmae? in welsh means How are you?

Hoffet ti ddiod? means Would you like a drink?

It's true ?

Peter

Yes Peter,

Nearly all primary schools in Wales teach Welsh now, with the objective of sustaining Welsh as a living language into the future. So we may see this proportion of Welsh speakers increase. About 60-100 years ago, pupils were punished for speaking Welsh even in the school playground, but I think the negative effects of this policy have diminished now.

I live in a Welsh speaking part of Wales though I do not speak it myself.
