Title: Forum Activity
Post by: JRS on June 27, 2020, 08:18:57 AM
All,

I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of my AWS server due to the lack of participation in the forums I facilitate. Use it or lose it, your choice.

Hi John
I understand you ...i simply don't know what to post or post about what .
As you can see i am working in my free time on my little interpreter.
I also visit forum almost every day ...
but situation is similar almost everywhere just look into JoseRoca forum.

There are 66 members here and less than a handful post anything. Even Charles has gone MIA. I don't mind donating my time to keep these forums running but $75 a month out of my retirement is asking too much when nobody participates.

$75 a month??  :o

It was $130.00 a month (for years) until I deleted a few idle instances I didn't know I was being charged for.

@John
that's too much money coming out your pocket and no return on your investment, I say close it.

I pay 3 bucks a month, maybe i can host the forum if i get the domain permissions.

Your domain was on the for sale block recently and if you're only paying $3, what happened.

My point was if no one wishes to contribute to the forums any longer, why host them at all other then for archival purposes?

I feel like I put food on the table and everyone just watches it rot.

Oxygen basic board on JoseRoca forum is still valid..right?
And can be used for posting.
Also there is github with issues board.
I don't know is there a sourceForge o2 board?
And also i can open o2 board on my ucoz.site...
so still left lot of options...i think... ::)

John price has nothing to do with forgetting to renew it. There is no need to throw
missjudgements, a simple no would suffice.

Wherever Charles decides to host it, ill follow.

Yes exists...and work like a forum...so i don't see a problem why not using it?

I probably won't be making a decision on my server and hosting forums until the first of the year. A lot depends where the pandemic takes us.

You can see here where the pandemic will take us:

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

I am following the data since the beginning of March, and I suppose if no miracle happens, then the result will be the same as after the Spanish flu. So much progress has been made in medicine since 1918, but nobody expected this lousy catastrophic leadership and support. Many of these fatalities could have been avoided. And at the moment it seems this is only the beginning. In the United States they expect that there soon could be 100000 new cases per day (and probably many additional deaths per day). This will have an impact to the rest of the world too, and for me it is really scary. And there has not yet been a second wave.

So John
do you have in plan to close site/forum..?
Title: Re: Forum Activity
Post by: JRS on July 10, 2020, 09:14:45 AM
As stated in a previous post I won't be addressing my server and forum hosting until the first of the year unless the pandemic makes things worse.

The reason for this thread was to get members to use the forum not how I plan to deal with it if nothing changes.

Have you thought about focusing your forum hosting efforts for those in your part of the world where they won't have to deal with your terrible english skills?

oxygenbasic.org got listed on spamhaus causing widespread rejection of emails. I had it removed so our emails should get through now.

Welcome back!

You are a critical asset to O2's future.

The city I live in has installed a fiber network that gives me 1 GB up/down speed. It will be installed in a couple of weeks. My plan is to dump my AWS EC2 instance and host the forms locally. I still plan on using Plesk as my hosting software so no changes to your hosting service Charles. As this gets closer I'll post a notice. I don't perceive the sites being down for more than an hour.

This will save me $75 a month which more than pays for my new fiber service. This also eliminates my $125 / month Comcast bill.

Update:  My fiber connection will be installed this Saturday. It will be 4X faster than my AWS instance I'm currently running.

I built the new hosting server with Plesk as the hosting software. Tomorrow the fiber connection gets installs with 5 static IPs.

I used my old Toshiba laptop for now. It actually mirrors my AWS instance. (4GB - 2 cores) but is double the disk size. (500 GB) With the fiber connection bandwidth speed should be 4X faster than AWS.

I'm planning on keeping the AWS instance as a backup (dormant) until the end of January.

The fiber connection was installed today but the old laptop I'm using as the server only has a 100 mbit network card. This limits my up/down to 90 mbits.  :-\

I couldn't use the default modem / router as it doesn't support static IPs. So this means I need to get a ethernet switch and router for my WIFI connections. I'm also going to have to buy a faster PC with a gigabit ethernet  card.

This first round proof of concept will save me a lot of time doing it again on the new sever. Ubuntu also needed to be reconfigured to use static IPs and not its DHCP.

New Server (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08J454MXJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_9B93FbED0VFT6) arriving December  23. (Wednesday)

Hi John,

I thought you had to be a large enterprise, like a server farm, or broadband service provider to get server routing rights :)
Title: Re: Forum Activity
Post by: JRS on December 22, 2020, 02:07:04 AM
The AWS  Zen instance only has 2 virtual cores and 4 MB of memory. Bandwidth speed is about 250 mbits.

Having a fiber connection changes everything. Over 920 mbits (up/down) of bandwidth, 4 cores and 8 MB should increase my server performance 4X. I have 5 static IPs which is also a requirement for self hosting. I'm still using AWS Route53 as my worldwide DNS service. I'm also moving from CentOS (Redhat) to Ubuntu as my server OS.

Plesk does all the firewall and security layers the same as the EC2 instance.

I'm one of the early adapters on the city fiber network. Support is 24/7 by city employees. A bright bunch of guys.

Hopefully tomorrow Wednesday the 23rd I will start migrating forums off AWS on to my new server with a fiber connection.

FYI;

The new server shared server static IP will be 23.90.90.90. How cool is that?

Server and router arrived. It brought up Windows 10 Pro with no issues. Next step is to install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Sever over the top of it.

I have https://opensage.org/forum running on the new server. I also have the ScriptBasic's forum moved but it needs work. I need to reload a fresh copy of the SMF software and make sure permissions are correct.

Once the server runs stable for a couple days I will move the O2 forum over to the new server as well.

I ended up getting a gigabit switch as trying to port forward throuh the router LAN port was unstable.

Charles,

If you are having any problems logging into your Plesk control panel let me know in a PM.

This migration turned into a nightmare when trying to add an IP to AWS trashed the server instance. AllBASIC.info and ScriptBasic.org are seriously compromised and trashed Plesk when trying to migrate the forums. I will need to rebuild these two forums on a local copy of Plesk. The RaspberryBASIC.org site is operational and seems to be fine.

I'm now off AWS and Comcast and running 100% fiber local.

The attached image shows server usage under Plesk.  :)

I just found out my Windows 10 Power Shell had SSH / SFTP built in. You may need to enable it as it's not enabled by default.

Once I get my new server updated with all the cleaned up forums I host I plan to create another AWS EC2 sever instance as an insurance policy if my local server goes down for any reason. All I would need to do is restore the sites from my latest offline backups and switch DNS IPs on Route 53.

I was able to install gitlab-ce on my new Raspberry Pi 4B 8Gb. I have the ScriptBasic repo (sb-dev) in the sandbox.

Looks like Theo updated PHP exposing about a half a dozen deprecation issue I had to fix with 2.0.17 SMF. I wonder if he knows anything about PHP? Typically I would share the fixes with other forum admins but since I was banned there, they can go to hell.

I would be willing to bet money that Jose Roca's forum has been compromised and members e-mail and passwords are out in the wild.
Welcome to the Jose Roca spam server! It won't be long before your e-mail is added to spammer databases. Good luck getting that undone.

Hi John, I see the occasional 'offline' but it doesn't last long.

The only time you should see an offline message if I'm rebooting the server after a kernel update. (rare)

What I'm looking for are members that find themselves IP banned (access denied) for an hour due to something they were doing while logged in.

Hi John, I see the occasional 'offline' but it doesn't last long.

Does that happen when you do something in particular? Chances are you are being banned as well.

Nothing specific. I mean, occasionally,  it won't refresh a current page.

Seeing posts without ban complaints must mean I've disabled enough of the OWASP rules to make things functional. Don't be shy and let me know if you run into anything else that seems weird.

The "Latest in progress" Button on the oxygen site does lead into nowhere.
Maybe the site needs an update?

Works for me. (click wizard)
Theo needs to fix his PHP deprecation errors and lock down the forum so its members aren't added to spam DBs.
