My guess is Steve does too much cocaine.

Well, I prefer Cocoa, and not up my nose.

I'm looking at A FreeGlut/Opengl combo for Oxygen's cross-platform GUI. It's low level but lighter than SDL. Also the Shader and Vertex Buffer Object technologies, which displace much of traditional OpenGl, as required (in the form of OpenglES)  on many mobile devices.

With SB I'm looking for easy to use. SDL does a pretty good job with their API and so far it seems very portable.

Charles,

1. Your video is a killer! :D It's almost as entertaining as the US presidential elections. And it's not cocaine, no. It's adrenaline at large. It's in the US blood and spirit and culture. The most amazing thing though is that they usually happen to make the right choices and appointments amidst all this phantasmagoric bedlam. :D

2. Now seriously, if you would care to listen to my opinion, I'd suggest you take a closer look here. This entry was already mentioned in the OpenGL tool list by some guy on the basicprogramming.org forum. Do not let the screenshot mislead you as to how the controls may look in vivo. If my memory doesn't slip me, the package should contain at least one very attractive dark-colored theme for both the "windows" and "controls". I should have this package somewhere on my disks but I can't verify it right now as I'm currently under elementary (wink-wink John :) ).

I'm very fond of designing my own UI controls and GUI's. And I'm pretty proficient in OpenGL too. Yet I'm also quite sure I wouldn't have enough patience and perseverance to reproduce what this package has to offer out of the box. There are some glitches in it but they are easier to fix than try and design your own OpenGL windowing and common controls system with similar functionality from scratch and keep it user-friendly and familiar at that. OpenGL code is highly portable by definition so you're unlikely to have any problem with code maintenance on different platforms at all.

I'm telling this for fear lest your would-be Oxygen environment effort be attacked, defamed, and defeated by Aurel & Co. similar to what they have recently done to the unfortunate ClipperBASIC GUI presented on basicprogramming.org. :)

P.S. If that happens to be the wrong package, i.e. the one with no theme options inside, please let me know and I'll search through my archives to find the one I was talking about.

Thanks Mike,

I've downloaded GLUI to take a closer look. I'm intrigued by controls, but not sure how much time I can afford to develop a completely independent system. With OpenGl's transform matrices, designing controls with moving parts is pretty easy, and there is already a strong candidate for edit-boxes (ProjectsA/OpenglGui Viewer F7) with keyword highlighting capability. This is probably the most complex of the commonly used controls, so all others might be regarded as a diminished form of edit-box :)

Will also need to add FreeImage to the dependency list, or something similar to support all the image formats, especially jpeg and png. Now this is an item I would not like to tackle from scratch!

Aurel,

Nothing personal; it was just a figure of speech. I can agree to "zxdunny & Tomaaz & Aurel" and leave out "& Co." :)
