As stated in a previous post I won't be addressing my server and forum hosting until the first of the year unless the pandemic makes things worse.

The reason for this thread was to get members to use the forum not how I plan to deal with it if nothing changes.

Have you thought about focusing your forum hosting efforts for those in your part of the world where they won't have to deal with your terrible english skills?

oxygenbasic.org got listed on spamhaus causing widespread rejection of emails. I had it removed so our emails should get through now.

The city I live in has installed a fiber network that gives me 1 GB up/down speed. It will be installed in a couple of weeks. My plan is to dump my AWS EC2 instance and host the forms locally. I still plan on using Plesk as my hosting software so no changes to your hosting service Charles. As this gets closer I'll post a notice. I don't perceive the sites being down for more than an hour.

This will save me $75 a month which more than pays for my new fiber service. This also eliminates my $125 / month Comcast bill.

Update:  My fiber connection will be installed this Saturday. It will be 4X faster than my AWS instance I'm currently running.

I built the new hosting server with Plesk as the hosting software. Tomorrow the fiber connection gets installs with 5 static IPs.

I used my old Toshiba laptop for now. It actually mirrors my AWS instance. (4GB - 2 cores) but is double the disk size. (500 GB) With the fiber connection bandwidth speed should be 4X faster than AWS.

I'm planning on keeping the AWS instance as a backup (dormant) until the end of January.

The fiber connection was installed today but the old laptop I'm using as the server only has a 100 mbit network card. This limits my up/down to 90 mbits.  :-\

I couldn't use the default modem / router as it doesn't support static IPs. So this means I need to get a ethernet switch and router for my WIFI connections. I'm also going to have to buy a faster PC with a gigabit ethernet  card.

This first round proof of concept will save me a lot of time doing it again on the new sever. Ubuntu also needed to be reconfigured to use static IPs and not its DHCP.

New Server arriving December  23. (Wednesday)

Hi John,

I thought you had to be a large enterprise, like a server farm, or broadband service provider to get server routing rights :)

The AWS  Zen instance only has 2 virtual cores and 4 MB of memory. Bandwidth speed is about 250 mbits.

Having a fiber connection changes everything. Over 920 mbits (up/down) of bandwidth, 4 cores and 8 MB should increase my server performance 4X. I have 5 static IPs which is also a requirement for self hosting. I'm still using AWS Route53 as my worldwide DNS service. I'm also moving from CentOS (Redhat) to Ubuntu as my server OS.

Plesk does all the firewall and security layers the same as the EC2 instance.

I'm one of the early adapters on the city fiber network. Support is 24/7 by city employees. A bright bunch of guys.

Hopefully tomorrow Wednesday the 23rd I will start migrating forums off AWS on to my new server with a fiber connection.

FYI;

The new server shared server static IP will be 23.90.90.90. How cool is that?

Server and router arrived. It brought up Windows 10 Pro with no issues. Next step is to install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Sever over the top of it.

I have https://opensage.org/forum running on the new server. I also have the ScriptBasic's forum moved but it needs work. I need to reload a fresh copy of the SMF software and make sure permissions are correct.

Once the server runs stable for a couple days I will move the O2 forum over to the new server as well.
