Why self registration has been disabled

Like many others, this Forum is exposed to thousands of spurious registration requests generated by spam bots. While the facilities for detecting and blocking these is effective and quite efficient it is rather dispiriting so I thought we might try the human approach, making it easier for real persons to join but much more difficult for bots that cannot pass the Turing test :)
