Site Access Policies?
« on: May 23, 2019, 10:05:20 AM »
Hey John,

It's become harder for me to access your sites direct from my native East-European domain. Access used to be instantaneous before but now it takes up to a minute for all the handshaking courtesies before I'm actually allowed to connect to the forums. OTOH if I use an allegedly US-based VPN, I'm getting through almost as fast as I was before using my native domain.

Any changes in your hosting provider's access policies lately?

I've noticed that an o2 forum page refresh now takes about 30 seconds here in the UK.

The Yanks are getting more and more annoyed with GDPR as its 1st anniversary on May 26, 2019 approaches. Its "preparation stage" is almost over, and the supervising authorities are gradually passing from their predominantly advisory to full control mode of operation. Non-compliance is fraught with penalties as high as €20m, and those weak in spirit overseas prefer to ban the entire continent from access rather than make an effort to comply. ;D

I haven't changed anything and access for me seems like it always has. I'm running this forum on an Amazon EC2 instance with Route53 DNS services. I have at least 6 DNS entries which span the world.

When did you notice the slowdown? I can ask Plesk for assistance if I can get more details. Are you having the same problem with AllBasic.info or ScriptBasic.org?

I'll have a peek at Route53 and see if they changed DNS URLs. If so Charles will need to update his GoDaddy account.

Charles,

I changed your account to unlimited traffic like the rest of the sites I host. You have the only customer account which defaults got used. I don't know if this is going to help the slow down issue but it can't hurt.

Thanks John,

I don't think it has made any difference.

I see that the page updates quickly but there is a lengthy 'busy' period, same behaviour and timing as the Allbasic forum. (I'm using FireFox)

Let's see if it has made any difference for Mike in Belarus.

I'll reboot the server and see if that helps.

Server Rebooted

Anyone else outside the US have access / site performance issues?

John,

It seems like your recent actions whatever they were have cured the problem for me. My FF now accesses both OxygenBasic and AllBasic directly very fast like it did before I complained.

Thank you!

Let's see if Charles reports the same good news.

There have been a lot of updates over the last month or so. A reboot was probably needed. Hope that's all it was.

Same behaviour as before.

It refreshes web pages almost immediately, but spends another 30 seconds doing something in the background - perhaps filing a report to the NSA or other agents with sunglasses  8)

I might disable the site tracker as what you're describing sounds suspicious. Are you seeing the same for these sites as well?

https://allbasic.info
https://scriptbasic.org
https://raspberrybasic.org.  (no tracker)

You might want to log into StatCounter and make sure ignore  cookie is set.

Yes, the other sites have the same behaviour, except for raspberrybasic which completes almost immediately.

I just logged into StatCounter and they suspended my subscription due to trying to bill an expired CC. I downgraded to a FREE account. Let me know if you're still seeing the slowdown now.
